Thomas succeeded to the title on 21st August 1949. He was Equerry to the Duke of York from 1936 to `1937 in which year he was invested MVO. When the Duke of York became King George VI the earl became Equerry to the King between 1937 and 1952, and continued as Extra Equerry to Queen Elizabeth II. He was awarded the Order of Christ of Portugal in 1955 and later the Royal Order of George I of Greece in 1963.
As a soldier he served as Aide-de-Camp to the Commander-in-Chief, Middle East in WWII becoming a major and later an Honorary Colonel of the Royal Norfolk Regiment.
As the 5th Earl had no sons the title passed to Anthony Louis (6th) (1909-1994), then to Edward Douglas (7th) (1936-2015, then to Thomas Edward (8th) (b.1965). The heir apparent is his son Edward Horatio b. 2003.
