David was Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight from 1986 to 1995 and the last Governor of the Isle of Wight from 1992 to 1995. His family have played a prominent role on the Isle of Wight since the 1850s.
He was made an Honorary Doctor of Literature by Bournemouth University in 1993 and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1984 and was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. He succeeded to the title 4th December 1966. He served in the Royal Navy, commanding HMS Cossack 1958/59 and HMS Ajax 1963/65 before retiring in 1966.
Winston Churchill and the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII and Duke of Windsor) were his godparents
