In1971 Roderick married Lady Tessa Fitzalan-Howard, eldest daughter of Miles Fitzalan-Howard, 17th Duke of Norfolk. They have four daughters; Lady Willa, Lady Kinvara, Lady Maria and Lady Candida. Kinvara is a playwright. The Family seat is Burpham Lodge near Arundel, Sussex.
On 4th October 2025 Lord Balfour wrote to the Daily Telegraph - Sir - Your article into the health dangers of wood burners ("Wealthy 'do not notice' harmful wood burners", report, September 30) contained the amazingly patronising remark by the chief executive of Asthma and Lung UK that those of us who have them do so for "aesthetic" reasons. We use ours for keeping warm. Drax power station burns imported wood and gets subsidies for it. I'm not asking for that - just to be left alone by over-zealous academics.
As he has no sons his brother Charles is the heir presumptive
