Claire was the 3rd daughter of Harold Nickols (1848-1925) of Sandford House, Kirkstall, Leeds who was the proprietor of Joppa Tannery, 87 Kirkstall Road, Leeds, which had been built by Harold's father, Richard Nickols in 1828. Later the business became Harold Nickols Ltd.
