When Rachel learned that her beloved sister Margaret was ill with a fever, she rushed to her bedside to nurse her. Margaret recovered but her sister then became ill herself and died some fifty-seven days later aged twenty-seven.
She is buried in Greyfriars Churchyard, in Edinburgh.
