George enlisted on 24th June 1916 in the RFA (Royal Field Artillery) but was not called up until 3rd April 1917. His service number was 211216. He joined 'B' Battery, 148 Brigade RFA in Ipswich, Suffolk where he served as an engine driver. His Service Record shows that in 1919 he was admitted to No 10 Stationary Hospital with VD. When he was discharged on 20th November 1919 at Purfleet, Essex he went to work for William Green & Sons as a flour packer at Brantham Mills.
