Edith married firstly W G Redfern with whom she had 5 children and they lived in Scarborough. Secondly she married Richard Smailes born 27th May 1859 in Whitby. They lived at The Pines, Goathland, Yorkshire. He died 12th December 1943. Richard had been married previously in 1886 in Whitby to Kate Jackson (1854-1927). Richard and Kate had 5 children.

Edith's parents were Thomas Horner North born in Hull, Yorkshire in 1827 who died in Howden, Yorkshire in 1906 and Ann (Annie) Elders born 1832 in Yorkshire who died in Sculcoates, Yorkshire in 1905. They had married in 1857 in Scarborough, Yorkshire and had 2 sons and 1 daughter.

In 1939 Edith Smailes was living in the Malljar Hotel in Whitby. Richard was 80 by then so perhaps he was in a home.
