In 1871 Viscount Newry was elected to the House of Commons for Newry, a seat he held until 1874 when he served as High Sheriff. In 1880, shortly after succeeding to the Earldom he sold Shavington to Arthur Pemberton Heywood Lonsdale. As an Irish peer he was not automatically entitled to a seat in the House of Lords but the followingb year he was elected an Irish Representative Peer and sat in the House of Lords until his death. In 1890 he was made a Knight of the Order of St. Patrick.
Previously, as Viscount Newry re was commissioned Cornet in the North Shropshire Yeomanry Cavalry in 1865, then promoted Captain in 1871 before the Cavalry were merged into the unified Shropshire Yeomanry regiment. He was promoted Major in 1880 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1889 in command of his regiment. He retired in 1896 and became the regiment's Honorary Colonel. After the accession of King Erward VII in 1901, Lord Kilmorey was appointed Aide-de-camp to his Majesty for the service of his Yeomanry Force.
