With Crossley and Sons Ltd., at Dean Clough until 1869, when he "retired from business" being delicate in health from childhood with a lung condition. He settled at Eastcote House, Eastcote, Pinner, Middlesex, then travelled in France, Switzerland and Scotland. In 1881, he travelled to California and the following year, moved to Colorado Springs where he died in the October of that year during a visit from his brother Edward.
