Gay was the daughter of Sir Frank Guy Clavering Fison (chairman of Fisons, the fertiliser and pharmaceuticals business) (11/9/1892 - 13/4/1985) MP and Evelyn Alice Mary Bland (17/8/1901-27/7/1985) They had married in Ipswich on 23/2 1922 and in 1939 were living at Stutton Hall.
Gay studied art at the Chelsea School of Art and for many years attended Maggi Hambling's life drawing classes at Morley College in London.
