Julia Salmond was the youngest daughter of the Hon. James William Salmond (1807-1848), Resident Councillor of Penang, East Indies and Fenella Cullin MacKenzie (1819-1905) and grand-daughter of the late Mr William McKenzie of Scatwell and Strathgarve, Ross-shire, Scotland. The Hon. James Salmond and his wife Fenella were married on 03 10 1840 at Penang in Bengal, India where he was noted at the time as being Resident Councillor of Prince of Wales' Island.
Julia was baptised on 30 11 1845 in Malacca, Bengall, India.
