| Mother | Marie (Kitty) (? - ?) |
Verbal family history and tradition confirms Sir Alexander as Maria's father but as there is no documentary evidence, she remains unmentioned in published histories of his life. However, a bible protected by a leather travelling case, belonging to Maria was almost certainly given to her by her father and has been passed down by successive generations until it was given to the Nor'Westers and Loyalist Museum by Ken Hawkins in 1986. The Museum is in Glengarry, Williamstown, Ontario.
Maria was brought up in Scotland by her paternal Aunt Margaret (Mrs James Dowie). She married Robert Monro, a widower, whose first wife had been Margaret's daughter also named Margaret. They had 6 children.
