John's parents were Daniel Ames Clarke born 25th May 1817 in Manchester who died on 21st Feb. 1883 in Oxfordshire and Arabella Caroline Sheridan born 9th Nov. 1813 in Plymstock, Devon who died 21st Feb 1872 in Manchester. They had married on 5th Sept. 1845 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and had 5 sons.
