Alexander, who died unmarried is something of a mystery. He is said to have served with the Naval Brigade in the Zulu War of 1879, to have been present at the battles of Gingihlova and Ekowe and to have retired from the Royal Navy in 1880 aged 21 only to die 7 years later in New Mexico, one suggestion being that he was murdered.
His grandmother was Amel Rosa Elizabeth Charlotte Souter Johnson Kelly born 1801 in Middlesex who died 29th September 1871 in Sutton, Surrey. She was known as Rosa and died Rosa Tayton.
