John was educated at Cornwood School (1924-26); Twyford Preparatory School, Winchester (1926-30); Charterhouse (1930-1935) and RMA Sandhurst (1935-37). He was commissioned into the Devonshire Regiment and posted to India where he spent most of the war years in the Signals Corps. John returned to the UK in 1944 and after service in Mogadishu left the Army around 1949 in Kenya. A number of jobs followed until he became Director and Secretary of James Hawker & Co, Plymouth, after the death of his father, from 1959 to 1964. Thereafter he worked with his daughter, Caroline, to develop the Beacons Riding School.
