#897, Hannah Mary COBBOLD

Hannah is a very dedicated teacher who was shown in the tree in 2016 as a trainee teacher but who now (2022) is an Assistant Headteacher-Personal Development at Epsom & Ewell High School.  Since then she has married Luke and had a daughter Marnie named after her grandmother.

In 2025 I gave my mother's (Mary Selby Cobbold nee Parkin #408) christening chalice to Hannah & Luke to be engraved to Marnie when they have decided on a christening or naming ceremony.  Details of the chalice are as follows:

MARY SELBY PARKIN (1908-2000)

Born 4^th December 1908 in Selby, Yorkshire to Rev. Maurice Parkin (1859-1912), Vicar of Selby Abbey and Laura Annie Hammond (1868-1937), local organiser of the Mothers’ Union.

MSP was christened on 14^th December 1908 in Selby Abbey by her father. The Abbey was being rebuilt following a fire at the time. The fact that her christening present was a chalice suggests the donor was either in or closely connected to the Abbey. Her parents or grandparents perhaps.

The Chalice

The chalice is 14 cm high by 11 cm wide and bears the following marks:

JW in 2 equal circles seems to indicate that it was made by John Edward Wilmot of Hylton Street, Birmingham who traded there, having registered in 1899 until at least 1911

The lion passant indicates that it is silver

The Anchor indicates that it was assayed in Birmingham

The lower-case h indicates that it was assayed in 1907. 

I also have in my possession a small circular (17 cm diameter) silver dish or platter of the type used for wafers at a Holy Communium service.

The Platter

The Platter is engraved Mary Selby Parkin from her Godfather T G Hawdon.  The marks H A indicate it was made by Atkin Bros who traded between 1854 and 1957.

The lion passant indicates that it is silver.

The crown indicates it was assayed in Sheffield

The lower case p indicates that it was assayed in 1907

Tom Gibson Hawdon DL (York) (1847-1926) seems to have been connected with or to have held lay office in Selby Abbey because he is commemorated by a memorial window in the South Choir Aisle.  He and William Hawdon (his father I suspect) ran the Selby Brewing & Wine Company for a number of years.  In earlier times Tom was an Ensign in the 38th West Riding of Yorkshire Rifle Volunteers (31.1.1870) and later became Commandant of West Riding Yorkshire Volunteers (1st).

I have since given the platter to Hannah & Luke for Marnie.
