In WW2, Lt. Ewart commanded a motor torpedo boat and on 17 01 1942 this came under fire from a German vessel. From the explosions, he lost an eye and was severedly injured in his right arm. He wore a patch over his eye for the rest of his life. He was later captured and sent to Colditz Castle where he remained until 1945.
Sir William was was the son of Major William Basil Ewart born 1890 Belfast, Ireland and died 13 02 1920 Antrim, Northern Ireland and Rebe Anette Grindle, born 1891 and died 3 11 1930 Antrim, Ireland. They married 1917 Lisburn, Northern Ireland.
