James Maitland Balfour was the son of James Balfour born 1785 in Scotland and died 1845 in Scotland and Lady Eleanor Maitland, daughter of James Maitland, 8th Earl of Lauderdale, born 3rd October 1790 in Scotland and died 23rd May 1869 also in Scotland. They married on 19th January 1815 in Scotland and had five children.
James inherited Whittingehame House and his Highland estate as well as a house in Grosvenor Square in London. He became a director of the North British Railway from which he earned a fortune. He was MP for Haddington from 1841 to 1847 and a Major in the East Lothian Yeomanry Cavalry who erected the Balfour Monument overlooking Traprain Law, 4 km south west of East Linton, Scotland.
