William married firstly (in 1730) Elizabeth Eyre who died the following year without issue. (Mary) Ann Atkinson was his second wife (1732) who gave him 2 boys and 2 girls, 3 of whom died without issue. William was Governor of Fort William in Bengal and between 1748 and 1766 he variously held the posts of Director and President of the East India Company. He purchased The Abbey House, Chertsey and is buried there in the local church, under a pew.
