John trained initially in medcine but was subsequently ordained. After his father's death in 1804 he inherited the Aspall Hall Estate and the incumbency. His memorial reads "The Rev. John Chevallier MD born 1774, succeeded his father at Aspall. He was thrice married [Caroline Hepburn, 1808; Emily Bloomfield Syer,1816 and Elizabeth Cole, 1821]. He died in 1846 regretted and beloved by all who had known him, his sweet temper and amiable disposition having endeared him to all."
In addition to running the family cider business (which he nearly bankrupted) his concern for the mentally ill led him to open Aspall Hall as a home for deranged patients. His great interest in agriculture brought him the credit of having first cultivated what became the celebrated Chevallier Barley. This became the barley of choice for fifty percent of brewers in subsequent years.
