Frederick was educated at Altrincham Grammar School and went on to Cambridge. He became Barnabas Lindars SSF (Society of St. Francis) and was ordained an Anglican priest in 1949 and served as Professor of Biblical Criticism & Exegesis at the University of Manchester from 1978 until 1990
