 Entered 6th (Iniskilling) Dragoons, 1898 and became Captain in 1902 (temporary on half-pay 1906). Served in South Africa 1899-1902, present at attack on Vaal River, march to Bloemfontein, capture of Pretoria, action of Komati Poort. Mentioned in despatches thrice, medal with five clasps. DSO awarded 1902.

For their gallant and dashing conduct Lieutenant R B Johnson and Lieutenant F E Moffitt, who was serving under him, were mentioned by Lord Kitchener (#733) in despatches on 8th October 1901.
