Thomas George HALLUM

#6093, Thomas George HALLUM

Born 1840
Died 1917 in Colchester, Essex
Father John Thomas Lay HALLUM (1811 - 1867)
Mother Sarah Matilda COBBOLD (1821 - 1895)

Remained at Wormingford and carried on the farming business.

His obituary in the Essex County Standard included... "Whilst at Lexden he took a keen interest in the Church, being a Churchwarden for twenty years, and he will be very difficult to replace. We may get as good a man but we certainly cannot get better. He might best be described as a good, homely country gentleman, never obtruding his company or his views on anyone, yet always willing to give of his wide experience in affairs. In his younger days he was a fine sportsman, happy always in the pink of the Essex and Suffolk Hunt, and a straight rider. He was also a useful cricketer, and these characteristics he carried with him into his work in later years, never taking advantage of anyone, but always doing a good turn in his quiet way whenever he could. He thus endeared himself to his fellow parishioners, and will be much missed. When he took a thing in hand he did it thoroughly, which, as with his loyal service as Churchwarden, his many years secretaryship of the Lexden and Stanway Horticultural Society (in the sports side of which institution he was ever the moving spirit) and in the organisation more recently of the parochial presentation to Mr. J F Motum on his retirement from the headship of the school, of which Mr. Hallum was one of the managers."
