Thomas was educated under Mr. King in Ipswich before going up to Trinity College, Cambridge where he was admitted in 1776 and matriculated in 1777. He proceeded to his BA in 1781, the same year as he was ordained deacon by the Bishop on Norwich, whereupon he became curate of St. Matthew, Ipswich. In 1783 he was ordained priest by the Bishop of Gloucester and appointed curate of Harkstead & Erwarton, Suffolk. His MA was awarded in 1784. Shortly after ordination he became minister at Gedding in Suffolk but was permitted to be absent from the parish due to the lack of a suitable parsonage. His signature features on anumber of Marriage records for St. Clement's in Ipswich around 1792.
