Mary was the sister of Sir Thomas Gallwey, Givernor of Montreal. She was and remained throughout her life a deeply religious woman who seemed to have few interests outside her evangelical faith. Her parents were John Gallwey (1781-1844) and Bridget Blood (1795-1839) who married on 19th June 1819, living and dying in Ireland. Mary bore Charles 13 children.
