His father was General Charles Lutyens (1773-1848) and his mother was Frances Jane Fludger (1789-1850). They had married on 6th May1824. His father was Deputy-Commissionary-General of the Army and spent most of the family money on re-planting Ned's eldest brother's beetle-failed coffee plantation with tea.
Charles was friendly with Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (7/3/1802 - 1/10/1873) (Knighted 1850) as a result of which Landseer was godfather to his son who was also named after him.
