#5778, Alfred Chevallier PARKER

Born 1874 in Waimate, Canterbury, New Zealand
Died 1935 in Gloucestershire
Father Harry Rainy PARKER (27 Jun 1837 - 15 Dec 1912)
Mother Frances (Millie) Emily Jane KITCHENER (22 Jun 1848 - 10 Feb 1925)

As a Staff Officer in the Egyptian Army Alfred was known as 'Parker Pasha'. He served several years in then Sinai commanding the garrison at Nakhi and organising an intelligence network amongst local tribesmen. After that he worked in the Intelligence Department in Cairo, and early in 1915 he held the appointment of Governor of Sinai, reporting to the Director of Intelligence.

The Largs & Millport Weekly News reported on 2nd January 1915 that Captain Chevallier Parker had been appointed political agent for the North Red Sea Patrol and has had the temporary rank of Lieut-Colonel conferred on him. Captain Parker is eminently suited for such an important post as he spent most of his military career in the Sudan and knows Arabs well.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1918 and retired from Egyptian Government Service in 1925.
His diaries, published in 1983 were titled: "The dairies of Parker Pasha; War in the desert 1914-18 told from the secret dairies of Colonel Alfred Chevallier Parker, nephew of Lord Kitchener, Governor of Sinai, and military intelligence chief in the Arab Revolt."
The correspondence between Parker and Sir Reginald Wingate is held in the National Archives.
