He was the fourth son of Sir Walter Bagot 5th baronet (23/8/1702-20/1/1768), of Blithfield Hall, Staffordshire, was ordained deacon in 1757 and was appointed Rector of Leigh, Staffordshire 1757 and of Blithfield, Staffordshire in 1759 and Prebendary of St Asaph from 10 May 1796 He inherited Pype Hayes Hall, which had been in the Bagot family since 1630, on the death of a cousin. His mother was Lady Barbara Legge, daughter of the Earl of Dartmouth (1701-1765) Walter and Lady Barbara married 27/7/1724 in West Bromwich.
He had 7 children by his first wife Anne and another 8 by his second, Mary Ward,
A vigorous correspondent with William Cowper with whom he was "much intimate" at school
