Joined the Navy at 12. Invalided home with a crushed foot at 17. Served with the Pacific Fleet and in the Crimean War. He represented the Royal Navy at a coronation in Siam and was presented with a portrait of the Mikado which he gave to the Museum in Sidmouth, Devon, where he had retired.
