David was the third of 17 children of a Jewish family, of Dutch origin. His father was a stockbroker in London. In 1793 he eloped, married a Quaker and became a Unitarian. His family cut him off and he set up as a stockbroker on his own. He made a lot of money, purchased the Gatcombe Park estate in 1814 and became interested in politics. He restored several parish churches in Gloucestershire.
