Sir Roger served in the Grenadier Guards 1944-47. He was sub-editor and leader writer for The Times and Deputy Editor of The Listener. He became senior assistant, then special assistant (public affairs) BBC from 1972-77; special assistant to Managing Director, BBC TV from 1977-82; chief assistant to director of programming BBC TV 1983-86 and consultant to Director General BBC in 1986
