Lord Cairns was educated at Wellington. He was commissioned into The Rifle Brigade achieving the rank of Lt in 1885; Capt in 1895; Maj in 1898 and Lt Col in 1905. He served in South Africa in 1902 and in Europe in WWI. He succeeded to the Earldom on the death of his brother (who had been his best man) in 1905. He bought and restored Farleigh House in Farleigh Hungerford, Somerset and lived there most of the second half of his life. He was succeeded by his son David Charles
