Following his commission into the 1st Battalion, The Somerset Light Infantry Michael went to India for six years spending one of those years on the North West Frontier. In 1944, in Burma, when the time came for home leave the position between Britain and the Japs was such that he chose to forego the home journey. He was badly wounded while leading an attack with great gallantry, and would not allow anyone to go to his assistance. It was reported that the battalion had lost a first class regimental officer; well liked, cheerful, reliable and brave. He was held in high regard by officers and men. He is commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial.
He was unmarried.
