#272, Algernon Waller COBBOLD

Algernon was educated in Beccles, Suffolk and privately, prior to entry at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1874 where he resided 3 years. He became a Captain in the Suffolk Royal Garrison Artillery (E Div.) from 1886 before being promoted Hon. Major in 1900. He served as a Captain in the Remount Service during WW1 and was sometime a councillor for the Alderton Ward of East Suffolk following the retirement of Mr Cuthbert Quilter M P in October 1888. Although born in Norfolk he seems to have spent most of his life in Hollesley where his father was Rector from 1857 to 1884.

He welcomed the hunt across his land gaining a reputation for dispensing hospitality appreciated by a large field and served efficiently as a Judge at the local regatta from his "pretty little yacht, the Clematis."

A ball at Holywells on 4th January 1887 was attended by the 'good and the great' including, in addition to himself Mr & Mrs F Cobbold, Mr & Mrs Lucas Cobbold, Mr & Mrs A T Cobbold, Mr & Mrs F Charters, Mr & Miss R Cobbold and Mr Horace Cobbold. 

A report says that in 1892 he presided at the prestigious Bull Hotel Dinner in Woodbridge " at which the more pre-eminent residents of the town and countryside gather to discuss the public life of the neighbourhood"

The Ipswich Journal of December 1st 1894 reported a lecture given by Mr Packard on West Indian industries and scenery including Jamaica and Trinidad.  He referred visiting a plantation belonging to Mr Algernon Cobbold, a cousin of Mr Felix Cobbold.  This is the only reference known to such ownership.

The Freeman's Journal published in Dublin on November 11th 1875 reported that Algernon Walter Cobbold (note error) of Caius College, Cambridge was charged with assaulting P P Carter and attempting to rescue Mr Fleming of Pembroke College from custody during a disturbance in Cambridge.

He died unmarried.
