Brita Muriel COBBOLD

#243, Brita Muriel COBBOLD

Born 18 Jun 1896 in Calcutta, Bengal, India
Died 25 Nov 1984 in North Dorset
Father Henry Ralph (Ray) COBBOLD (1863 - 07 Mar 1929)
Mother Brita (Tissie) Emily Watson PALIN (1871 - 1942)

Born to a well-to-do, if not prosperous merchant in Calcutta, Brita was given, aged 7, a miniature 'Hymns Ancient & Modern', surface area little more than a large postage stamp, leather bound and with gilt page edges. Into this she stuck pictures of a dog and a puppy, one of which she called James. Also in the hymnal when it was acquired by the Trust was a rhyming prayer, cut from a newspaper praising God's productivity from the land.

Brita returned to Britain from Calcutta arriving on 28th April 1920 but we do not know whether this was a permanent or temporary change. We do know that 'The Graphic' of April 16th 1921 printed this picture of her with the caption 'A GOLF CHAMPION. Miss Cobbold, of Calcutta, who recently won the Indian Ladies' Golf Championship on the links of the Calcutta Club at Tollygunge.'

At the time of her mother's death in 1942 Brita was living at Poyntington in Dorset.
