| Occupation | The first of four Whites to be Rector of Levington over a period of 150 years (1776-1926) |
It is said that the White family was prominent in Chevington for many years. It is thought that 4 Whites were Rectors of Chevington for exactly 150 years from 1776 to 1926. As far as we can tell John White 1 was rector from 1776 to 1818. As 'our' John White died in 1818 he must be John White 1. He married Elizabeth Keable (spelled Keble in the church) (1765-1844) so she was 22 years his junior. She was the daughter of Ralph Keable of Beccles and is commemorated as dying on 11th February 1843. A Richard White who died October 23rd 1797 aged 4 could have been their son. Two Whites were killed in action. Cyril White, a Lt. in the 12th Light Dragoons died at Nagode in central India on March 6th 1839 or 1859. John White, Lt. in 2nd Bn.Hampshire Regiment, eldest son of John & Alice White was killed at Gallipoli on June 4th 1915 aged 24. There's another John White who has the dates 1785-1851 (but are these life dates or rector dates?) and yet another John White who is said to have been rector from 1853- 1903. We know that Elizabeth proved her late husbans's will.
His father was Richard White and his mother Sarah. John's christening is recorded as the same day as his birth.
