John Church's father, John Backhouse (1779-1842) was one of the principle underwriters of the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the first treasurer of the company. His mother was Eliza.
The Trust has the family bible given to John Church and Anna Gurney on 8th November 1843 (presumably their wedding day) by their Aunt Elizabeth Fry #15031.
John & Anna had one surviving son, John Henry Backhouse (1844-1869)
