#15362, Mary SOUTHCOTT

Mary Southcott was the daughter of Thomas Southcott (1512-1600), MP for Bovey Tracey and Grace Barnhouse (1523-1547).  She was William's first wife by whom he had three sons and seven daughters.  We show 2 sons (Richard & William) and 1 daughter - Joanna.  The other son was John (died 1644) who like his brother William matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford and again like William appears not to have married.

The daughters were a) Mary, born 1586 who married Sir George Chudleigh, 1st Baronette of Atherington, MP for Mitchell, Cornwall 1601; MP for East Looe 1614; Tiverton 1624; Lostwithiel 1621 and 1625.  Parliamentarian.  b) Joanna, later the second wife of Sir Francis Drake, 1st Bt. of Buckland who died 1637.  Drake, the nephew of his seafaring namesake was elected MP for Plympton Erle in 1624 and then MP for Devon in 1628 and High Sheriff of Devon in 1633.  She then married John Trefusis of Cornwall in 1639. c) Ursula who married Sir John Chichester (1598-1669) MP for Lostwithiel in 1624 and knighted in 1625.  d) Frances who married 14/15-year old Sir Samuel Somaster of Ashprington in 1606 or 07 e) Juliana who married Sir John Davie, 1st. Baronet of Creedy near Crediton, Devon, MP for Tiverton 1621 and Sheriff of Devon 1629/30 f) Margaret who married Sir John Younge of Stetscome and g) Elizabeth who married Edmund Specot (died 1620) second son of Humphrey Specot MP for Specot, Devon.
