David was injured in the Battle of Britain but was determined to fly again. He was killed
in action in December 1941, aged 26. He was
a Flight Lieutenant and acting leader of 80
Squadron. He had just been awarded the
D.F.C. when his Hurricane was shot down
over Libya, North Africa.
His death came shortly after his father
succeeded to Holkham. His mother, whose journey to Holkham had been delayed by flu, had felt a premonition on the day he died that all was not well. On her arrival at Holkham she learned that he had been posted missing. David’s death was confirmed in the New Year.
