Katie, an accomplished pianist, who wrote and published 'The Empire Waltz' brought her children from South Africa in the Boer war in 1899 after a bomb landed in their garden, and brought them up in Bedford. She had 4 children before Dayrell: Percival, Constance, Dorothy and Madeleine, who was head of the Royal Naval School for 30 years. After the RNS Twickenham building was bombed in WWII Madeleine oversaw its move to Haselmere where she continued as head until 1959.
