#1454, Algernon Ivan (Toby) SLADEN

He was brought up largely by his grandmother, Lady Evelyn Cobbold, as his parents lived in Switzerland at the time. He was educated at Stowe School and went on to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he learnt to fly with the University Air Squadron (and won an aeroplane in a raffle!)
He was called up to the RAF in 1939 and joined Coastal Command. He piloted such aircraft as Whitleys, Sunderlands and Halifaxes from bases in the UK and Iceland and was awarded the DSO for attacks on U boats. After the war he left the RAF and married Gelda MacGregor in 1948. He managed the Glencarron Estate and inherited it on the death of Lady Evelyn in 1963. He was a keen stalker.
