#14446, Rachel LE VAVASSEUR DIT DURELL

Rachel was the daughter of Thomas Le Vavasseur dit Durell, Viscount of Jersey (1723-1785) and Marie Aubin (1734-1813)  Her father's will:  

In the name of God, Amen. I undersigned Thomas Durell, Viscount of this island of Jersey, being, thanks be to God, of sound mind and understanding.

And after having recommended my soul to Almighty God to the end that he may be pleased after this world to receive it in his eternal kingdom by the merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour, I dispose of my temporal affairs as follows.

I give and bequeath unto the poor of the parish of St Saviour one hundred livers according to the King’s order, and to the poor of the parish of St Helier one hundred livers according to the King’s order.

I give to my son Thomas all my books, as well manuscripts as printed, which are in Jersey. As to those which did belong to my brother [Rev Canon Dr David Durell (1729-1775)], which are at Oxford, I have given the same to my son David, as also the ancient gold, silver and brass coin of my said brother, which are still here.

And as to the remainder of my personal estate, as well in Jersey as in Great Britain, which God has been pleased to bless me with, I give and bequeath, after the payment of my debts and legacies, one third part thereof to my well-beloved wife Mary Aubin, and I do give the other two thirds to my sons Thomas, David and John, and my daughters Mary, widow of the late Charles Le Maistre, gent., Margaret, wife of Mr Matthew Gosset, Rachael, wife of Mr James Lempriere Hammond, and Jane, to be divided between them by equal portions, my son Thomas and my daughter Margaret accounting for two hundred pounds each which I have advanced them on my succession. As for my daughter Ann, wife of Mr Nathaniel Cotes, she is to remain satisfied of what I gave her when she married, which is more than what she could claim at present for her part of my personal estate.

I give and bequeath my gold watch to my cousin Thomas Franklin, son of John Franklin, Esquire, who I beg to accept a ring.

I do name, constitute and appoint my aforesaid wife, Charles Payn, Esquire, and James Hilgrove, gent., to be executors and executrix of this my last will and testament, to act jointly or separately, and beg my executors to be pleased to accept a ring as a small token of my regard and affection.

Thus done my last will and testament wrote with my own hand at St Saviour, my place of abode, this first day of September, one thousand seven hundred and eighty three. Witness my hand:

Rachael and Jacques had 9 children: Rachel (1784-1798); Marie Brohier (1786-1866); Marguerite Gosset (1787-1878); James (1788-1860); Nicholas (1790-1814); Jane Robin (1791-1871; Elizabeth Ann Robilliard (1792-1872); Thomas Durell (1798-1840) and Jean (John) 1801-1880).
