Bernard was educated at Trinity College, Glenalmond (until 1923) and Dundee University (until 1927) where he obtained a degree in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. His father was Henry James Macthomas Thoms, known as Harry, who was in the stock broking and insurance business and who was a ranking Scottish Chess player.
