William was a comedian, an actor, manager and one time proprietor of the Drury Lane Theatre, of whom it was said "He had never been excelled and seldom equaled". A marble tablet in his memory is to be seen in St. John's Church, Waterloo Road on which is inscribed (in Latin) "Not far from here is buried Robert William Elliston in whose memory his surviving children and friends have erected this monument in Marble."
