Sir Savile Crossley was baptised on 16 08 1857 at Square Chapel, Halifax, Yorkshire.

He was educated at Eton; Balliol College, Oxford (athletics Blue, 100 yards 1880). He read classics and gained a BA in1881.

MP (Lib) for North Suffolk, Lowestoft Division, 1885-92; served South Africa, 1900-01, as Captain in the the Imperial Yeomanry (Sharpshooters); promoted Lt. Col.; MP for Halifax (Liberal Unionist), 1900-06; Paymaster-General, 1902-06, contested (Con) West Islington, 1910; Lord in Waiting to George V, 1918-24, director, John Crossley & Sons, 1894, Chairman, 1905-19; Hon. Sec, King Edward's Hospital Fund from its inceptionm, 1897; of Somerleyton Hall, Lowestoft, Suffolk.

There is a memorial tablet in his name in the church at Somerleyton and full length oil portraits of him and his wife hang above the main staircase at Somerleyton. His seated statue in Carrara mable by Joseph Durham 1865, as a child aged eight, "On the Seashore", is in the entrance hall at Somerleyton.

He is buried in Somerleyton Churchyard.
