On 27 Apr 1923, John arrived in New York on the SS Aquitania sailing from Southampton. The US Immigration Ellis Island Records state he was 25 years old, single, a valet from Chelmsford, England, and that he could read and write. He paid for his own passage and was going to join his brother Wilmot Legerton in Philadelphia. He was 5' 9'', in good health with a fair complexion, brown hair and blue eyes with no distinguishing marks.
