Rudolph was also 7th Earl of Desmond who succeeded to his titles on the death of his father in 1865. He was a noted Roman Catholic convert. After his death in 1892 he was interred with his first wife Louisa Pennant (great granddaughter of the Welsh naturalist and travel writer Thomas Pennant) at the Franciscan Friary which he had founded at Pantasaph in North Wales.
Rudolph was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge.
