Educated at Eton and New College, Oxford and having become a Lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards Alexander was a partner in Thomas R Miller & Son. He was a director of P&O Lines between 1966 and 1975. He was Chairman of the London Assay Office from 1991 to 1995 and Prime Warden of Goldsmiths' Company from 1993 to 1994. He lived at Hunterswood House, Chipperfield, Hertfordshire.
