In the 1911 Census where Alfred Pope is recorded as serving with the RSR and RAMC, he is living with a Ruth Baker, with whom he has lived as her husband for five and a half years. In the 1939 Register, he is a Bag Dealer living with Ruth born 19 02 1878.

At some point Alfred and his father Henry dropped the 'Brownfields' from records such as marriage and death records. Alfred joined the Royal West Surrey Regiment on 30 08 1916 in Camberwell. He transferred to the 332 Field Ambulance RAMC a few months later as being unfit for active service. He was discharged on 02 11 1917 as being unfit for service with Bronchial Pneumonia. On his WW1 Service and Pension Records, he is married to Florence L Cobbold and has two children. His next of Kin is Ruth Baker living at 65 Lambeth Road, Lambeth, London (his final address).
