First husband. Ernest was a Saw Mill Hand when he enlisted in Ipswich on 11th December 1915 under the Derby Scheme. At that time he was living at 22 Hawes St. Ipswich. He gave Mrs M Pryke of Burstall as his next of kin and he is commemorated in a stained glass window in St. Mary's Burstall. He served with the 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment and went to France on 15th August 1917. He served in both France and Flanders where he suffered gun shot wounds to his right side which caused him to have a severe chest infection. He was transferred to a Military Hospital in Arquata, Italy where he died of Pneumonia on 6th January 1918. He is buried in the Military Cemetery in Arquata.
His name appears on the Burstall, Suffolk War Memorial.
